Be aware of these 4 symptoms after a car crash

Have you hurt yourself in a car wreck? Being involved in a crash can lead to stress, pain and serious injury.

You may not fully understand the extent of your ailments at the scene of the accident. It can be days before you realize that you may have serious injuries. Some conditions require extensive medical treatment and a long recovery period. In the days following an auto wreck, be on the lookout for certain symptoms.

Headaches

It is common to experience headaches following a motor vehicle accident. After all, dealing with the aftermath of a wreck can be stressful. Mild headaches are not always cause for alarm.

If nausea, blurred vision or extreme sensitivity to light, sounds or smells accompany headaches, see a doctor. These could be signs of a traumatic brain injury.

Neck pain

If you were in a rear-end collision, you may notice a stiff neck. This may be a sign of whiplash. Neck pain may persist and spread to your shoulders and back; you may lose range of motion. In some cases, symptoms may worsen without treatment.

Weakness or numbness

Your arms and legs may become weak or difficult to control; you may lose sensation or function. Seek medical attention immediately, as such symptoms may be signs of damage to your spinal cord. Prompt care may help halt swelling and limit future damage.

Emotional distress

Mild stress after a car crash is normal. However, excessive stress can be harmful. If you experience repeated flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty concentrating or bouts of severe anxiety, seek mental health care. You may have post-traumatic stress disorder.

You may need help paying medical bills, but do not leave your injuries untreated. You should not have to suffer due to the negligence of another driver.
